Reduced Adoption fees at Nashville Humane Association

Homemade Pet Stain Remover

I am always looking for a better solution to clean pet accidents. I ran across this recipe on Recipezaar. It worked really well. I did still have a small, very faint yellow spot remaining from one accident that I cleaned, but I was told you can't see it unless you're looking for it.

Ingredients:

16 ounces hydrogen peroxide
1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid soap
1 tablespoon baking soda

Directions:
1. Using any plastic container, mix the solution in order given, apply or spray a generous amount where needed.
2. After a day or two vaccuum.
3. It works wonders, no stain, no ODORS.
4. CAUTION: do not store leftover mixture, it will build up and can explode.

This week Publix has Milk Bone Dog biscuits on sale for $3.69 Buy One Get One Free (making them $1.85 each) If you use the $2.50 off 2 boxes from the Redplum insert in June 7 paper, it will make them .59 each!

Publix also has Iams Cat Food 3.5-4lb bags for $5.99 each. There will be a $1.00 off coupon in this Sunday's paper, making it $4.99 a bag.

Metro Animal Control goes High Tech

We're so happy to hear that Metro Animal Control is getting a much needed upgrade with their computer systems. With the new system, all calls will be logged and reported. Glazed Dog Treats

Pet Treat Recipe:
Glazed Dog BiscuitsYield: 24 servings

1 Envelope dry yeast

1/4 c Warm water

1 pn Sugar

3 1/2 c All-purpose flour

2 c Whole wheat flour

2 c Cracked wheat; -=OR=-1 c -Cornmeal

1 c Rye flour

1/2 c Nonfat dry milk

4 ts Kelp powder

4 c Beef or chicken broth
-----------------------------------GLAZE-----------------------------------

1 lg Egg

2 tb Milk
Place 2 oven racks in the upper & lower thirds of the oven. Preheat oven to 300F. Sprinkle the dry yeast or crumble the compressed yeast over the water (110F if dry, 100F if compressed). Add the pinch of sugar & allow yeast to sit in a draft-free spot for 10 to 20 minute.
The mixture should be full of bubbles. If not, the yeast is too old to be useful. Stir well to dissolve the yeast. In a large bowl, place all the dry ingredients & stir well to blend them. Add the yeast mixture & 3 c broth. Using your hands, in the bowl, mix to form the dough, adding more broth if needed to make the dough smooth & supple. Half a batch at a time, knead the dough briefly on a lightly floured counter. (Keep the 2nd batch of dough covered with a moist towel while shaping and cutting the first.) Roll out the dough into 18 x 13 x 1/4-inch rectangle. Cut into desired shapes using 3 1/2 inch bone cutter or 2 1/2 inch cookie cutter. Reroll the scraps. Repeat procedure with remaining dough. For an attractive shine, lightly beat together the egg and the milk.
Brush the glaze on the cookies. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes or until brown & firm. For even baking, rotate the cookie sheets from top to bottom 3/4 of the way through the baking period. Use a small, angled metal spatula to transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature-cracked wheat & kelp are available at most health food stores-Use 2 cups of bran cereal (not flakes) in place of the cracked wheat, if desired. If your dog is large, make larger cookies. Allow the cookie sheets to cool completely before using for the next batch. Distribute cookies evenly around sheet; avoid crowding or overlapping.

Pet Food Bank at Nashville Humane Association

In response to the declining economy and the influx of pets being given up or even worse, abandoned, Nashville Humane Association has opened a Pet Food Bank. Folks that are going through a rough financial time (i.e job loss, etc) and need assistance in taking care of their pets can come to the food bank and receive free food and supplies. Here are the requirements:

* Must be a Davidson County Resident (and show proof)
* Must show proof of financial need
* Unemployment checks
* Letter of Disability
* Section 8 Housing resident
* Medicaid Recipient
* Food Stamps recipient
* Other proof on case by case basis
* Must have all pets spayed or neutered (show proof by way of vet records)
* If a client does not have animals altered the first visit, they will still be eligible for
assistance.
* NHA will call the week following and make arrangements for animal(s) to be brought in
to be altered in the ROVER spay and neuter program.
* Clients must have animals altered in order to receive food assistance again.

Food and supplies are given out on a first come, first serve basis
Clients are only permitted to receive assistance once a month. NHA Volunteers try to provide enough food to accommodate 30 days if possible.

The Pet Food Bank is open:
Wednesdays 1pm - 4pm
Sundays 1pm - 4pm

If you or someone you know is in need of assistance for their pets, please contact the Nashville Humane Association.

NHA is also in need of donations to this program. The food bank is run entirely upon donations. If you can donate pet food or supplies (i.e. cat litter, dog collars, dog/cat treats, etc), It is GREATLY appreciated! No amount is too small. You can also drop off food supplies at many local Krogers. Just look for the barrel labeled "Feed a Hungry Pet" that's usually very close to the customer service desk.
